I started painting in 1989 and chose watercolor as my medium; it continues to be an exciting, fascinating and challenging medium to work in. I consider myself a direct painter since most of my work is done en plein air, on location. My favorite subjects are landscapes - New England street scenes, harbors, and waterfront subjects, particularly on Cape Ann in Massachusetts. Lately I've been doing a series on old diners. I spend my summer at the shore and am never at a loss for subjects to paint. Cape Ann has a fascination for me, probably because I associate it with my childhood. My parents and I spent many summers there and I always feel at peace when I am painting in that environment. No other area really conveys the same feelings to me. I try to communicate that serenity and beauty in my work.
Paintings of jazz musicians either in a club scene or concert setting are also important subjects for me. I am the founder and director of Highland Jazz in Newton, MA, which presents an annual series of concerts. One of my jazz paintings was selected as the cover piece for "People in the Arts in Newton", published by the Newton Library in 1995.
I am an artist member of Audubon Artists, the Copley Society, the Cambridge Art Association, the North Shore Arts Association, the Rockport Art Association and I am a signature artist member of both the New England Watercolor Society and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. In 1997 I was awarded the title of Copley Artist at the Copley Society. . I am an Associate Member of the American Watercolor Society and exhibited a painting in the 136th annual International Exhibition in 2003.
My painting "Reserved Parking" was selected for inclusion in the 1999 publication, "The Best of Watercolor Three". The October 2003 issue of "American Artist" magazine featured a story about my work entitled "Landscapes and All That Jazz." One of my paintings appeared in the Brooks Pharmacy 2004 calendar which features work of New England artists.
In the past fourteen years I have exhibited in more than 70 juried exhibitions. I have won numerous awards including the Gold Medal for Best in Watermedia at the 60th annual exhibition of Audubon Artists in October 2002. Other recent awards include the following:
New England Watercolor Society, Annual Members Show, January 2004, Honorable Mention for "The Sentinel"
Rhode Island Watercolor Society, 105th Annual Members Show, May 2001, C. Harris Memorial Award for "Misty Morn"
Rhode Island Watercolor Society, 7th Annual National Competition, October 2000, John Singer Sargent award for "Alpine Place"
I am an Associate Professor at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA where I teach courses in art and also in computer technology and communication.
