Artists at the Villa 22 Burnham Rd West Newton MA 02465 Intersection of Valentine and Chestnut Home 617-527-5443 Studio 617-332-9967 efried@massmed.org
Stylistically, my work can be described as non-abstract. I paint what I see in oils or pastels. My favorite subjects are landscapes and city-scapes inspired by my urban childhood.
I hope that my art conveys a warm, satisfying, traditional and even sensual feeling. I try to achieve this through subject matter and composition. I strive to arrange the images in my painting in a rhythmic pattern for I feel this attracts the viewer, then subject matter and color follow. However, it is the unified concept of the picture which capture's the viewer's eye. For example in a room of unfamiliar paintings, the viewer is first attracted to those images that are composed in a neat package, where the eye is led to the most important regions. I am a realist but I am often agreeably impressed by the well composed image in an abstract. In the final analysis, I strive to present a picture to hang on the wall such that the passing viewer will say "I like that picture."
I am a Native of New York but I have lived in Newton for over 50 years. After retirement from surgical practice and teaching at Harvard Medical School, I started to take continuing education courses at Mass Art and I have continued to do so under Janet Monafo. I now work with the Villa Group, semi-professional artists who with teacher, Ed Stitt, meet weekly.
I am not affiliated with any gallery but, at present, I prefer to sell my work from exhibitions and from my own home. I belong to the Newton Art Association and the Newton Open Studios.
