A New Art Center Curatorial Opportunity Program Selection April 1 – May 21, 2005

This exhibition showcases four artists investigating themes associated with the metropolis as metaphor for modern civilization. Through installation, sculpture, and painting, this exhibitions seeks to celebrate the decay, sprawl, and accoutrements of contemporary urban and suburban life. Curated by Clay Hensley and Anthony Smith. Artists include Carlos Ancalmo (NY), Clay Hensley (NY), Rie Oishi (NY), and Anthony Smith (NY).

On view in the Holzwasser Gallery, during all of Open Studios weekend: Before and After, works by Rhoda Sapers, an advanced painting student at the New Art Center.

In our Ceramics Studio: New Art Center Ceramics manager and instructor Stephanie Young will be doing wheel and hand building demonstrations in the New Art Center’s ceramics studio throughout the weekend. All are welcome to drop in any time!! Stephanie will also be available to talk about New Art Center class offerings for children and adults in Ceramics.

About the New Art Center:

Founded in 1977, the New Art Center is dedicated to artistic creation and education through classes, exhibitions, and public programs. Discover exciting classes, workshops, exhibitions, and children’s vacation programs in five well-equipped studios. Annually, we provide instruction for 1,700 students from toddler to adult in ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and much more. The Center is home to two galleries offering five to six contemporary art exhibitions each from September – June to over 3,500 visitors. Exhibitions are free and our Main Gallery is wheelchair accessible. Our unique Curatorial Opportunities Program provides administrative and technical support for aspiring curators and artists to mount shows in our main gallery.
