To breathe freshness and life into a painting.

My enthusiasm for painting is like my experience in trout fishing. When I first enter a stream, I splash too much, catch trees on my back casts and generally mess up instead of catching fish. But, gradually, if it’s a good day, I settle down and begin to get in sync with the rhythm of nature. All my cares and even my sense of time disappear. Finally, I feel completely at one with the world. As Emerson says, I am “nature’s eye.” The same feelings inspire me as a painter: to catch a particular magic moment and try to make it timeless. To reach for the ideal and the universal beyond the chaos of modern life.
I spent my professional career as a writer and editor—and am the author of four published books. On that rare occasion when someone says that I am lucky to have a gift with words, I have to confess that I find writing just plain hard work. Like sawing wood. Painting can be a lot more rewarding although it also requires discipline.
Since retirement, I have taken classes with Jill Pottle at the de Cordova; with Ruth Kates at the Brookline Art Center, and with Maris Platais at the Painters Guild of the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society. In 2,000, I received the Guild’s Paul Peters Memorial Award for Excellence Painting in Oils. I am currently studying with Ed Stitt who teaches at The School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and at Mass. Art.
