Anthony Fisher - 2003
A felt presence beyond mere painted shapes
Claflin School Studios 449 Lowell Avenue Newtonville, 02460 (Entrance is at 80 Oak Cliff Road) 617-964-2845 aefisher@attbi.com
My recent work started as memorials and tributes to important people in my life. The paintings are all still-life, objects that I arrange in my head. As I struggle to define each object's place, to fix it in space, I expand it or shrink it, scrape off, and rebuild, rework until the objects attain a felt presence beyond mere painted shapes in formal balance. What was once familiar, objective, rather crude, becomes gradually sifted and something else is retained.
Anthony Fisher currently exhibits at Prince Street Gallery in New York. Fisher received an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, and teaches at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts and at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. His work is included in numerous private and public collections.
