Until seven years ago, I had never picked up a paintbrush or a drawing pencil. As part of seeking balance and spirituality in my life, in 1996 I took my first watercolor class.

Since 1998, I have taught drawing and watercolor to adults in my own home. Recently, I also began working one-on-one as an "art coach." Teaching, I think, should be student-centered, a class should become a community, and art is best seen as a journey, not a destination. Most important is not the art we produce, but that, while drawing or painting, we truly look at the ordinary beauty (whether an onion or a landscape) in front of us.

Volunteering to teach art in prison is one of the most rewarding things I do. The men in my class are wonderfully grateful and respectful, and many are self-taught artists. What began as a "good deed" has become a blessing!

Winston Churchill, an avid amateur watercolorist, once said, "Painting is a companion with whom one may hope to walk a great part of life's journey.

"We must not be ambitious. We cannot aspire to masterpieces. The whole world is open with all its treasures … the vistas and possibilities are limited only by the shortness of life."
